Advanced 301: Looks and Matching Masterclass with DaVinci ResolveMasterclass

Resolve_Levels

Prerequisite:
Great for any current Resolve Colorists with at least 1 years experience or previous students who have completed either the ICA Basic or Advanced classes.

Certification Program:
The training program awarded by ICA, demonstrates knowledge of course content at the end of a set period in time for both newcomers and experienced professionals alike. There is absolutely no relationship with attaining higher education or degree to becoming a trainer so there is no means to be certified as a trainer at the end of the course completion at Media ASYLUM Learning Centre.

Introduction

Bring your movie or sequence to life. We will review movie sequences, discussing how the color and mode has enhanced the film.

Objectives

The course will be ICA certified with all students getting a certification.

Cert of Authorization

You will learn how to create the traditional “Looks” from Movies, TV commercials and Music Videos. We will then focus on matching those ‘Looks’, not only shot to shot, but also how to apply the look across a whole scene.

Warren works with different cut sequences, each showcasing different media techniques and trends to get the best of beauty type commercial works shot on the BMCC. Don’t miss a thing!

  1. Great for doing very soft/mist type looks.
  2. A war sequence shot on Sony F3. Fantastic for a ‘Saving Private Ryan’
  3. Bleach Bypass grade, a hot jungle look, or the classic Day for Night feel.
  4. ‘House of Cards’ reconstruction, based on the original scene shot on
  5. Arri Alexa. This includes dialogue and re-inacts the original scene from the classic Netflix series.
  6. Warren will then address the different challenges presented by each sequence.
  7. Students then get the chance to do the same in a timed situation, like a real session but with Warren playing the client’s role.
  8. Students are also encouraged to bring their own footage to work on and share with the class.

    • Using LUTs in a creative way.
    • Using Plugins and Resolve presets.
    • Preloading your timeline with Nodes.
    • Log grading v Lift Gamma Gain.
    • Advanced keying and curve control.
    • Power Windows used in a creative way.

How to approach a session, when to push the grade and when to hold back. Learn from Warren about how he deals with clients in the room. Create established looks and explore how to make new ones.

Remember it’s subjective so just play and have fun. Students are encouraged to bring their own material.

Trainer's Profile

The world is Warren Eagles’s oyster, but he particularly loves the bit called Australia. Warren brings more than 20 years grading experience; with over five of those years with Blackmagic Design’s DaVinci Resolve. Since then, Resolve has become a Choice to remain in Warren’s everyday life.

He has worked successfully on everything using Resolve; from commercial spots for Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, Qantas, Ford to acclaimed dramas including Rush, on Guy Ritchie’s cult classic Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, as well as a series of other music video projects for Radiohead, Oasis. He also has a lot of experience on a number of grading systems including the 2K plus, Pandora, Bones Dailies, and Apple Color.

The passion and delicate grading skills have landed him many freelance assignments with reputable high end post- production facilities in London and Australia.
